This is Wales’ first community ocean farm
Reviving the Welsh coastline and the fishing industry that locals have depended on for generations.
Câr-y-Môr, For the Love of the Sea in Welsh, is a community-owned ocean farm that is regenerating seas and soils while creating jobs for local people.
By working with coastal and rural communities, they use a whole ecosystem approach to restore balance both above and below water.
By cultivating seaweed with zero-input techniques, the community business reveals the ocean’s hidden power of fighting climate change, while nourishing people in more ways than one. (This is Gwyn Watson, Global Engagment Lead of Restor, visiting the ocean farm)
With Beach Food by Câr-y-Môr, fresh seafood and shellfish reach homes and restaurants across Wales and beyond.
Seaweed biostimulants from their farms help farmers care for soils naturally.
Early trials show remarkable results on British farmland: 24% higher yields in organic potatoes and an 18% yield increase in silage when added to traditional programs.
The sea farms are alive with life: 21 fish species discovered, proof that these waters are nurseries for young fish.
Last year: 20 tonnes of seaweed harvested. Today: 4 tonnes of mussels, 31,000 oysters, and 10,000 scallops, each silently filtering and cleaning the sea.
Beyond water, the impact is rippling out: 4,000 children educated through workshops. 22 full-time, year-round jobs created in St David's.
“Restor gives projects like ours credibility and a way to show data clearly so farmers, growers, policy-makers, and the public can see evidence that real, science-backed, nature-based climate solutions are happening here in Wales, opening doors to investment, funding, and partnerships.”
Anyone can join Câr-y-Môr by becoming a member, partner, volunteer, or investor to help shape a thriving blue economy.
