Episódio 2 da série 'Uma História Restor'

Storytelling is at the heart of Restor, amplifying the voices and stories of people and communities around the world working to protect and restore nature. This film is part of a broader series called ‘A Restor Story’ that journeys from India and South Africa, across the Atlantic Ocean to the Brazilian Amazon and the Atlantic rainforest, exploring seed saving, an experimental model of agroforestry and one man’s journey to reconnect his community with nature.

A story of innovation, experimentation and collective action

The northeast of Pará is currently undergoing a transformation in its biome: the so-called “savanization” of the Amazon, which means that the tropical forest has longer periods of drought. Cotton, native to semi-arid regions of the Middle East, is traditionally not suitable for regions with high humidity, such as the Amazon. However, the rapidly changing climate and the drying out of soils have been creating conditions for the cultivation of cotton in this region.

The latest episode takes you to the resilient communities in Pará, Brazil, who have shown us hope. Collectively, communities are responding creatively to climate change in a unique initiative: an experimental agroforestry model offering a new path forward where communities can balance sustainable agriculture with forest conservation.

FarFarm an organisation with the mission to develop supply-chains that regenerate nature, has been working in partnership with VEJA, a sneakers brand to create an organic cotton supply chain with 100 local families. As a key cash crop, organic cotton motivated these families to adopt the agroforestry systems, supporting both their livelihoods and sustainable land management.

Cotton is the first crop planted, but its short cycle allows native plants and trees to thrive afterward, restoring degraded land. This system provides additional food and income, like cocoa and fruits, while supporting both land regeneration and economic resilience through diversified income sources.

“With our contribution to the protection of this region in the arc of Brazilian deforestation, our dream is to create healthy systems so biodiverse and profitable that the biome returns to its original ecological condition, and cotton no longer becomes a priority crop” – Beto Bina, founder of FarFarm
