Restoring the oldest living rainforest

For years, the Daintree flourished. Agriculture and development fragmented the forest. The 2025 RestorLife Award Finalist is working to reconnect it all.

Rainforest Rescue secures high conservation-value rainforest pockets and then restores natural connectivity. So far, they’ve restored 47 properties, with over 245 hectares, nearly the size of Monaco.

From Sugar Cane to Canopy

After 127 years, the local sugar mill closed, halting sugarcane farming. Rainforest Rescue acquired the 18-hectare farm, replanting endemic trees to restore the land and welcome back wildlife.

Despite covering just 0.2% of Australia, the Daintree rainforest is home to remarkable biodiversity: 30% of Australia’s frog and reptile species, 90% of bat and butterfly species, and 18% of bird species.

Rainforest Rescue is rebuilding ecosystems, reviving ancient connections, and helping culture and country thrive again.

How do you know a forest is truly returning?

Rainforest Rescue uses Restor to monitor the Daintree's recovery through data and satellite imagery, tracking indicators like tree growth, carbon levels, and the return of native species.

If you ever find yourself in the Daintree…walk where the forest is growing again. Hear the cassowaries. Feel what regeneration looks like.
