It might not be as tasty as World Chocolate day, or grab headlines like renewable energy, but soil is essential for restoring nature.
Here are 3 reasons why we love the stuff!
In the face of the escalating climate crisis, soil is our ally. The carbon stored in soil is a key player in climate change mitigation. Practices such as agroforestry, cover cropping, and reduced tillage help sequester carbon in the soil, preventing it from being released into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide – a major greenhouse gas.
2. Soil Biodiversity:
Healthy soils support a rich biodiversity of microorganisms, fungi, and small creatures that contribute to the overall health of ecosystems. Biodiversity in soil enhances its resilience and ability to provide essential ecosystem services, such as water filtration, nutrient cycling, and supporting plant growth.
3. Soil and Agriculture:
Agriculture is deeply intertwined with soil health. Sustainable soil management practices, such as cover cropping, agroforestry, and reduced tillage, not only enhance soil fertility but also contribute to climate change mitigation.
