Restoring the oldest living rainforest

For years, the Daintree flourished. Agriculture and development fragmented the forest. The 2025 RestorLife Award Finalist is working to reconnect it all.

Rainforest Rescue secures high conservation-value rainforest pockets and then restores natural connectivity. So far, they’ve restored 47 properties, with over 245 hectares, nearly the size of Monaco.

When the local sugar mill closed after 127 years, naturally, the sugar-cane farming on a former 18-hectare land stopped. Rainforest Rescue secured the farm and transformed the fields by planting endemic trees, welcoming back wildlife, and at-risk species.

A few facts about the Daintree rainforest: it covers just 0.2% of Australia’s land but shelters 30% of all frog and reptile species | 90% of bat & butterfly species | and 18% of bird species.

Rainforest Rescue is rebuilding ecosystems, reviving ancient connections, and helping culture and country thrive again.

How do you know a forest is truly returning?

With Restor, Rainforest Rescue uses data and satellite imagery to track change, from tree growth to carbon to species coming back.

If you ever find yourself in the Daintree…walk where the forest is growing again. Hear the cassowaries. Feel what regeneration looks like.
